James and Elizabeth were active in the Quaker Religion, having served as overseers of Pikeland and Newbury meetings and serving on various committees. James was a cooper by trade, and a landowner.

Will of James Hancock:
The nineteenth day of the fourth month in the year of our Lord One Thousand
Seven Hundred and Ninety four, I James Hancock of the Township of Newbury in the County of York and the State of Pennsylvania Cooper: Being now in the decline of Life, but of perfect mind and memory, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die. I do ordain this my last Will and Testament, and that is to say, I desire that my Body be buried in a Christian
and decent manner, at the discretion of my Executors or friends. And as
touching such Worldly Estate wherewith I am blest in this Life. I give and
devise and dispose of in the following manner and form.
I Tim. I order first of all that the Doctor Bill and my Funeral expenses be
paid, and next that all my just Debts be discharged.
Imprims, I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth my beloved wife one feather bed, and one pair of bedsteads and sufficient bed cloathes thereunto belonging. One good milch cow, one spinning wheel, one table, one iron pot, and a sufficiency of other kitchen furniture equivalent thereunto sufficient for her own use.
I Tim. I give and bequeath unto my Eldest son James, sixty pounds inland and grain in the ground, (now sold to him for One Hundred pounds, exclusive of 7the sixty pounds which I here will to him. And likewise Five pounds in money for his filial services done while with me afte rhe was of age, which five pounds I direct to be paid to him or his heirs five years after my discease, by my Executors hereafter named.
I Tim. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth all her wearing apparel, and likewise all her bed clothes which she is now in possession of, her side saddle and bridle, and thirteen pounds in money, Three pounds of said thirteen is for her filial services done after she was of age, to be paid to her or her heirs seven years after my discease by my Executors.
I Tim. I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Sarah all her wearing apparal and bed clothes equal in number and value with her sister Elizabeth, a side saddle and bridle, and thirteen pounds in money. Three pounds of said thirteen is for her filial services done after she was of age, to be paid to her or her heirs eight years after my discease by my Executors.
I Tim. I give and bequeath unto my sons John, Benjamin and Joel for their and each of the filial services done after they were of age. Unto John my watch or seven pounds in money, and unto Benjamin my new saddle. And unto Joel a saddle equal to Benjamins.
I likewise give and bequeath unto my three sons above named (to wit) John,
Benjamin and Joel all the remainder of my real and personal Estate, after the
above legacies is deducted, each of them to have an equal share thereof, with each of them paying unto their Mother yearly and every year the sum of three pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania during her natural life, except she intermarries with another man, and if that should be the case with her, then that yearly legacy from my sons to her to cease. Notwithstanding if any of these my three last mentioned sons die whilst their mother remaineth my widow him or them that heirs his or their parts of the estate is to make up the
yearly dowry to their mother as above.
I Tim. I do likewise constitute make and ordain these my beloved sons John
Hancock, Benjamin Hancock and Joel Hancock all of the Township of Newbury in the County of York and the State of Pennsylvania affore said to be my only and my absolute and sole Executors of this last Will and Testament. And I do hereby utterly disallow, revoke and dis annull, all and every other former Testaments, Wills, Legacies and Executors by me in any ways before this time.
Names, Willed and bequeathed, Ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written.

"N.Ps. I James Hancock of the Township of Newbury in the County of York and State of Pennsylvania Cooper, in the foregoing Will recited do note here as a part of my Foregoing Will. That is to say, If any of my children before
mentioned in my will should die without leaving any lawful issue then my will
is that the whole of their part or parts of the Estate which I have here before
willed to them shall be equally divided among the rest of my children then
living. This I make as a Supplement to my foregoing Will. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and Seal this nineteenth day of the fourth month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety four.
